Throughout Early Years, our planning carefully builds upon our children’s  initial knowledge and day-to-day lives.  Planning reflects known interests, carefully balanced with the teaching of new knowledge, skills and experiences. This approach results in short, engaging topics that generate a high level of enthusiasm and motivation while effectively supporting all Areas of Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

We are dedicated to nurturing a love of books in our children.  To achieve this, we provide a language-rich environment where stories are not only enjoyed but also contribute to the development of vocabulary. Books are a fantastic tool for expanding our learning horizons. Each week we feature a focus book  although we remain flexible in our approach, allowing some books to extend learning opportunities over a longer period. We want our children to appreciate and revisit books, so focus books remain available in the environment.

As a one-form entry, the children often begin in  Day Care,  transition to Nursery and then Reception. We pride ourselves on the ‘family feel’ of our school and the development of secure relationships between practitioners and children. The children  spend time together in the shared outdoor area and the ‘togetherness’ feeling is further promoted by children sharing their successes across the classrooms.

To help the children understand that they are a valued member of the wider Littlecoates community, we gradually expand upon their environment. Initially, this begins with taking part in P.E. sessions with our  specialist teacher and visiting the school nature reserve. Our leaders regularly visit our youngest learners and the children look forward to them joining  in with their activities.

Exploring the local area through walks, allows the children to identify places that are personally important to  them, while visitors who support our local community, promote pride in our local area and provide inspirational role models.
