Activity 2 - Local History Through Art
This activity links to Global Goal 11.
In our Geography and History lessons, we have been learning about the history of Grimsby and how the docks are a key part of the town.
We learned that Grimsby is famous for its fishing heritage.
In our Art lessons, we developed key colouring mixing skills including making colours lighter and darker.
We created artwork to represent Grimsby.
We painted fish to represent Grimsby's fishing heritage.
Did you know that Grimsby was once the biggest fishing port in the world?
We shared our work and asked our Nigerian partners to create artwork representing their local area, and they similarly focused on animals native to their region.
Our Thoughts
Ayomide: I learnt that they are lots of different rare animals in Nigeria like rhinos, elephants and lions.
Alex: I enjoyed learning about the Nigerian animals becuase it was interesting. I also know that Nigeria is a lot hotter than England.
Storm: Sometimes these animals need to be saved as they are in danger.
Kyson-Lei: Grimsby is famous for fish and there are also fish in Nigeria.
Staff comments
Our students thoroughly enjoyed receiving fascinating information from the Nigerian children about the animals native to their region. This connected wonderfully with our history topic on the Cod Wars, allowing them to draw comparisons between endangered fish species from that era and Nigerian animals currently at risk. This cross-cultural learning helped them understand that animal endangerment is a global concern, not just one limited to Grimsby.
