Religious Education

Purpose

Our Religion and World Views Curriculum will enable pupils to gain the knowledge and skills they need to be confidently religiously literate, which will better enable them to participate in a diverse, global society. The Religious and World Views Curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to reflect on their own beliefs, values, ways of thinking and ways of linking ideas which will help them to grow and flourish as human beings.There is both depth and breadth of study. The RE curriculum is also about ‘belonging’.  It aims to nurture pupils’ awareness of diversity as well as sensitivity to the questions and challenges that different views and cultures can present.  We all share a common humanity and we share our view of the world with an understanding of others’ views. The knowledge and skills of the curriculum will inspire pupils to embrace academic success as well as continue with their life-long learning journey.  

RE at Littlecoates 

Religious education is taught at Littlecoates according to the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus. We aim to provide our children with religious literacy where they will develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other religious traditions and world views and explore their responses to life's challenges. This gives pupils the knowledge and skills to flourish both within their own community and as members of a diverse and global society. During each Key Stage, pupils are taught knowledge, skills and understanding through learning about Christianity and Islam through KS1, adding Hinduism in KS2. Other religions are explored through optional additional units. Each unit of work identifies prior learning and shows how this is built upon. 

RE is taught in a block unit within a term to allow suitable links to be made to specific religious festivals taking place or to link in with other topics being taught.  

Key areas of enquiry:

1. God: What do people believe about God?
2. Being human: How does faith and belief affect the way people live their lives? 
3. Community, worship and celebration: How do people express their religion and beliefs? 
4. Life journey: rites of passage: How do people mark important events in life?

Assemblies take place across the whole school and in classes; these are delivered by senior leaders, class teachers and our local  Christian outreach worker.

Parental Right of Withdrawal from Religious Education (RE)

At Littlecoates, we believe that Religious Education (RE) provides a vital space for students to explore diverse worldviews, develop empathy, and engage with the complex ethical questions of our time. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, objective, and educational rather than devotional.

However, we fully respect the rights of parents and carers regarding their child’s religious upbringing. In accordance with current legislation, parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the RE curriculum.
