Purpose

Art and Design is an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. It should enable children to develop core skills, and give them opportunities to express themselves visually in different media. They should feel a sense of pride and achievement as they build their skills and realise their potential. They should be introduced to the work of key artists from the present day, from history, and from a range of different cultures.

Art at Littlecoates

The children focus on developing core skills, mainly in drawing and painting, so that their creative and technical abilities have time to develop and embed. They develop, as artists, by consistently revisiting and extending their skills. They study the work of influential artists, gaining inspiration from them, and learning from their techniques.

Curriculum rationale

Purposeful, engaging learning opportunities encourage artistic development: 

• Objectives across all strands revisited and embedded within and across year  groups and key stages to ensure cumulative fluency; 

• Repeated exposure to a range of media and materials to allow for mastery  of techniques over time; 

• Deliberate focus on influential artists, and designers to ensure  exposure to the highest-quality arts and crafts.
